Since losing to Lazio in the Super Cup in their first game of the season, Inter Milan have not done too much wrong. In fact, they went on to play a further 13 matches and they have lost just 1 of those, being the 0-1 reverse against Sampdoria.
Inter Milan are sitting comfortably at the top of the table with 7 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss – they have a point more than 2nd placed Juventus with a game in hand. Inter have not won their last 3 Serie A games in a row, picking up 2-1 wins over Udinese and Catania, and sandwiched between the two, a thumping 5-0 away win over Genoa.
They entertain a Palermo side that sit in 7th spot. Palermo have now gone 5 games unbeaten and they have now won their last 3, against Juventus, Livorno and Udinese. I question their away form though. Prior to their win against Livorno last time on the road, they went 8 away Serie A games without a win, losing 5.
Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho is without former Real Madrid man Wesley Sneijder. Esteban Cambiasso is not expected to feature, meaning former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira is likely going to partner Dejan Stankovic in central midfield, flanked by Javier Zanetti and Thiago Motta.
Samuel Eto’o has wasted no time adapting to life in Italy and he will be complemented by either Mario Balotelli or Diego Milito. For Palermo boss Walter Zenga, Federico Balzaretti, Fabio Liverani and Levan Mchedlidze have both been ruled out.
Goalkeeper Rubinho is unlikely going to feature. Cesare Bovo and Moris Carrozzieri are banned. With so many first-teamers out, Palermo need the likes of Fabrizio Miccoli, Marco Bresciano and Fabio Simplicio to step up and be counted. Goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu must have a big game.
If Palermo were at full-strength, I would have had little trouble backing them seeing as they are in good form and they have done well at the San Siro in recent seasons. Inter Milan will know to not underestimate their opposition. In the corresponding fixture last season, Inter Milan went into the interval 2 goals up only to be pegged back by 2 Palermo goals in 4 second-half minutes.
That game ended 2-2. I don’t think Inter Milan will make the same mistake, and manager Jose Mourinho should set his side up for a comfortable win. Samuel Eto’o and Diego Milito have blended into the Inter Milan system seamlessly, and in 19-year-old Mario Balotelli, Mourinho has a pacey goalscoring back-up player to call on.
With Inter Milan having won their last 4 home games in the Serie A in a row against Parma, Napoli, Udinese and Catania, it looks like the -1 handicap on offer here is a relatively safe one.
